Hello all
I was looking for some information on living in the Fort Smith area. I am looking at what would be pretty much a dream job just across the border in Oklahoma. However I'm not sure how I would do living in the area. I have lived in lot of different places but never anywhere "southern". I am single, in my mid 20s, and not religious, and fairly liberal. Everything I have read about the Fort Smith area makes it sound very religious and conservative. How deep seeded are these attitudes? Are people there accepting of people with different beliefs? Also, are there any adult recreational sports leagues in the area?

Fort Smith can be a challenge if you are single, 20s, and not religious but there are people who do it. It has improved a little bit since the new mayor took over. You can drive to Fayetteville or Tulsa on weekends and they would probably have more of the scene you are looking for. If it is your dream job as well as a job that would give you career advancement, you could work there for a few years and then move somewhere more to your liking. Fort Smith cost of living is very low so that will give you opportunities to save to move if you have to.

The downtown scene is a lot better than many other cities of a similar size. I was surprised at the vibrancy of Fort Smith's downtown when I lived there and recent visit this March made it clear that it's still a great place. Decent acts at Neumeier's Rib Room (Grace Potter, Uncle Cracker, Eric Johnson to name a few), and a personal favorite for pizza is Papa's.

Don't swim in the river (some try).

TCKx3, I advice you to look somewhere else(state-wise) , if you think you can find "dream job" out here.
