It is a town of four hundred something people in a county of only 17k or so. Residents attend school at Cave City, 10 miles away. Crime? Probably about as safe as any place could be. Jobs in small towns throughout the Ozarks are limited unfortunately. Good luck in your search.

There are many facts about the town on the link below. Its a very small community, about 400 people. Jonesboro is about 55 miles away and is home to Arkansas Sate University. Jonesboro does seem to have a significant amount of crime. Good Luck.

Crime? We have some break-ins now and then. It's generally somebody from Batesville, as every body knows the usual suspects around here.

Schools, Most go to Cave City schools. Good school system. I know a few lads that opted to go to Melbourne instead.

The majority of the people work in Batesville, which is larger and has quite a bit of business in it. It's about 20 miles from Evening Shade to Batesville, easy drive on highway 167.

There's a VFW "private club" in town, which means anybody over 21 can come in and drink as long as you sign the guest book.

There's a good little country restaurant in town called "Woodie's", and a place that has a bunch of cajun spices and stuff and does some carry out and frozen stuff.

The county, Sharp, just went wet, and a Citgo Flash Mart in town will be selling package beer and wine. The flash mart is known locally as "Hookrum's". Use that name and folks will think you know what you're talking about.

Just to the north of town, is Ash Flat, which has a large Walmart, and a stretch of road known locally as simply, "The Four Lane", which is lined with businesses and restaurants.

Just north of Ash Flat is Hardy, which is a popular tourist destination with the Spring River and all.

Main street in Evening Shade is about two blocks long, and the sidewalks get rolled up at 5.

Feel like ya live there yet?

The Batesville newspaper might be helpful to ya.

That would be in Highland, just up on the 4 lane. There is also one in Horseshoe Bend if you want a change.

Don't believe eveything your read. There's nothing wrong with Evening Shade. There are boards that you can accsess that are inhabited by 10 year olds (mentally), that aren't going to give much info.

My suggestion is, visit. There are some nice motels up in Hardy. That's very close to Evening Shade, and you could spin down, grab a bite to eat, look around, stop in the little hardware store at 167 & Main Street, and generally absorb.

It's a small country town with it's own personality. Nothing more, nothing less.

People here are friendly and helpful, for the most part. But if you are not a religious person, go somewhere else. It is EXTREMELY conservative, both religiously/socially and politically. Lived here 5 years, and, since I'm not a church-goer, basically don't know anyone that isn't an immediate neighbor. The whole county is like that, and, even though we finally "went wet", and have some good liquor stores, there isn't much else. You will need the liquor if you aren't into this conservative culture, LOL.

There is a good grocery store in Cave City - though Cave City is awful otherwise, and a good one with a Deli and Bakery (Croissants are delightful!) in Highland. There is a Walmart Supercenter in Ash Flat. All are 8-10 miles. Batesville has real shopping and a Kroger's at 20 miles. Evening Shade has a huge new Dollar Store with groceries, but that's it, besides the gas station, which has pizza (actually decent!).

Mosquitoes are not too bad, but the chiggers and ticks will eat you alive. There are poisonous snakes, too, though I rarely see anything but garter snakes and (yuge) blacksnakes. Coyotes abound - keep your small pets indoors. And if you have cats, keep them in. Tick-borne cytauxzoonosis will kill them without prompt veterinary care. Two vet clinics in Ash Flat/Highland are both EXCELLENT, but a tad pricey for the country. The vets are the best thing about the area, given how much we love our critters!

CenturyTel has the lock on communications, and if you live here, 1.5 Mb DSL is the best you can get. At least it will let you have Pandora (local radio is limited to God stations and country music, mostly) and connect with the real world out there. (There are places in Highland/Hardy with FiOS from Fidelity. Go there, instead, if you want to come to this area for some reason.)

We bought here not knowing that once you get it, you can't get rid of it again. We wish we'd known that when we came here. There are no jobs, and real estate isn't just cold, it's FROZEN. I hate it here, as you can tell, but we're stuck.
