Hello, We are planning to take a road trip from Texas to Arkansas... Our plan is to have a relaxed vacation for 7-8 days with some small activities for our 3 yr old.. We thinking of maybe taking 2 halts - that is stay at a place & see things and then move to a second place & cover that.. and then come back... some places friends have suggested are Garvan Gardens, Eureka Springs, Devils Den State park, Queen Wilhelmina State park, Hot springs ... Of these, which would be a good place to stay and what activities can be done..
thanks to all for your suggestions.. it is greatly apprciated...

All good ideas, but Queen Wilhelmina State Park Lodge is closed and is undergoing a total "make-over".

That week is as good as any. Garvan Gardens is a good choice. There is one bath house that is/was open as a museum to show how it originally looked. It is worth the effort but check to make sure it is still open. And if you are into such things you may visit one of the nearby crystal mines. I almost forgot about the tower on the nearby mountain. You can see the "whole world" from up there. I know nothing about your other destinations.

Check out Magazine Mountain and then head north to the high Ozarks.

Garvan Gardens is definitely worth your time.

When you visit the Rogers area, I would suggest the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge over near Eureka Springs, or the Wild Wilderness Safari by Gentry. Northwest Arkansas doesn't have any zoos, but both of these parks have petting zoos and the parks feature drive-through's to see their more exotic and dangerous guests.

Also, you might want to visit one of the splash parks in Bentonville or Rogers. The Bentonville one is just off the square, the Rogers one is by the Youth Center and skate park off of North 2nd St. Bentonville has a super nice aquatic park with swimming pools that's very reasonably priced. Rogers has a super-nice aquatic park that's brand new and a bit expensive. Bella Vista has several trails, and the one with the swinging bridge is pretty short and interesting for a 3-year old. I don't know that the Crystal Bridges Museum would be interesting for a 3-year-old, but it does have programs for children that you might look into.

Oh, forgot to mention--first week of July is the Rodeo of the Ozarks in Springdale. There is even a mutton-busting event for little ones that's cute. And you might want to check out a Naturals game. They have a play area for kids with slides and swings.

lots to do in Hot Springs, take a dinner cruise on the belle riverboat, ride a "duck"' visit the national park area downtown, the casino at the race track, magic springs and the petting zoo for the kids.

Garvin Gardens is beautiful, but might be boring for kids. I would recommend driving up 540 which is gorgeous and has a tunnel through a mountain. Eureka Springs is a tourist town which tons of stuff to do like exploring caves.

It is reported in today's Mena (The Pulse) paper that the Queen Wilhelmina Lodge will not be open until April of 2014.

If you're planning to be in Eureka Springs on the weekend of the 4th and want lodging there, it's time to make reservations now. That weekend is peak and rooms fill up fast, or they used to. Might already be slim pickings.
