I rode my motorcycle up to the lodge last Friday and there's no progress on the lodge. I heard that they're aiming for the end of 2014 for a completion date. The entire front of the lodge is different from before. Even the fireplace has been moved.

For those who have never stayed there or have never seen it before, I guess that makes no difference, but for us who go "way back", I sure hate to see the changes.

I know what you mean, Slim....when they remodeled Mather Lodge at Petit Jean I was worried that they would destroy its character, but they said they were going to leave the original stuff intact. From the pictures I've seen, it seems to look great. I haven't had a chance to go back there since they re-opened it, but I want to. Petit Jean State Park is a great place.

The Mena Star newspaper just published a press release stating The Lodge will open July 1. Wonderful! They have spent mega-bucks and reads like they have done a super job with the re-do/upgrade. For those who like to see the fall foliage, that would be the place to stay because from the lodge you can see "forever". You probably need to get your name into the pot early though because they have only 40 rooms.

I have been to the Lodge at Mt. Magazine. How does this one compare to it?

We spent a weekend in Mt Magazine Lodge but haven't seen the Wilhelmina since they started working on it, but I suspect it will be equal or better, knowing what the state parks is doing in their updating. I understand they have done some updating on the beds and furniture at Ozark Folk Center too. Our daughter was the state parks Purchasing Manager when they built the Mt Magazine Lodge and she told some very interesting stories about the effort to get some specific building material and furniture. I haven't talked to her about it but I'm sure she is disappointed that she is no longer working for the parks and was not involved in the Wilhelmina project. She loved that job and her objective was to spend a weekend in every state park that had lodging. I don't know if she visited all of them but know she did a lot.

It will be well worth the trip. We are making firm plans to take a long weekend up there, soon.
