I finally called the police dept as I was advised to do, on two different houses, one in SC and one in NC, small towns.
Both were VERY nice and helpful and had no problem telling me if the sections I asked about would be safe, as the realtors cannot do!

Def proved one cannot go by photos; the house in SC had amazing photos, the Google street view was nice too!
But the lady who answered at the PD said no way, do not move there if I want to be safe from drugs/burglaries etc.
The fellow at the NC PD said it was a great area so I'm going to see that one tomorrow:
2304 Old Aberdeen Rd Rockingham NC

Cute! Looks like vinyl siding on it, that's good for an "old bag to live in alone". LOL The only problem I would have with it is the large highway right next to it....traffic noise grates on me.

But the neighborhood does look nice, and NC is a beautiful state. Mountains and beach both close by! That's the only thing about Arkansas....it's a pretty long way to get to a beach, which I'd like to be able to do for a change from mountains every couple of years or so.

Let us know how it turns out!

By the way, when you say "$30,000 max", do you mean you have a lump of $30,000 and you're going to sink it all into a house, or you can handle the payments on $30,000 max?

The house was darling and the town and section divine. BUT...
it needs MAJOR (like, everything) renovation. I do mean, everything: roof, wiring, plumbing, floors, windows, ceilings (Masonite tiles falling down, ew)...prob 15K worth. (OH siding wasn't vinyl it was metal)

Look at this charmer: 506 11th St Opp Alabama. I emailed the realtor. It looks move in ready but who knows. I am digging the idea of living in a town where my non-PC beliefs may be the norm; I am liking what I read re: Alabama.

Yep 30K max in cash I can allot to a house. Not going into debt as I have ZERO debt of any kind (sold my house in June 2014) and wish to own the place free/clear so I can will it to an animal sanctuary for them to sell and keep the proceeds.

The house looks good, but that part of the south will be hot as blazes in the summertime. On a positive note, you're not far from the Emerald Coast.

I prefer steel siding to vinyl. One good hail storm will show you why.
