Hi,
I'm looking into where I want to move, and have come across lots I like about the NW of Arkansas. Mountains, Lakes, hiking, cost of living, fishing, 4 seasons, not a "legal" state with people blowing there pot smoke In little kids faces.....to name a few!

But I'm wondering about bugs? Mainly those stupid annoying gnats that fly to my eyes and up my nose, on the what would be plesent days around here, but also would Love for the mosquitoes to not be so bad(im sure there's bound to be at least some no matter where I go, bummer!).

Currently in the nastiest place in Georgia...Southeastern area, opened the door this AM to let my dog out, and 4 or 5 mosquitoes flew Inside...grrr! And as I waited for my dog to finish "using the restroom" (ie. Sniffing anything and everything like it was her first time!) I was attacked by Gnats and a couple mosquitoes!! And now I have gnat welts all over once again!!!

I want to go where I can actually enjoy the outdoors most the year....and have a garden and chickens too!

Are there Gnats in Arkansas?
How bad are the mosquitoes?
What are laws on chickens in the backyard?

There are mosquitoes but they are not as bad as other areas of the state. I've never seen gnats. Livestock laws vary from city to city, if you live in the county, you'll be ok. Good luck to you.

Thank you! Guess its time to start looking more into specific citys in Arkansas now....although, I am debating between Arizona, and Arkansas as my two top states to move to. (Varying in climate and style I know! :-)

mosquitoes are not bad at all. Yes, there are some, especially around the water, but compared with Mississippi, LA and GA they are nothing. You will see a few every year. Gnats, that is a different story. It is hard to live in any southern state without being bothered by them. From May to about July. Usually they find other states to call home or other parts of AR. Some years they hang around longer. I don't know what kind of gnats you have, but I haven't heard of ours biting: they are just a pain.

We do have chiggers, which bother some people. Again, they move on by July, but in the mean while, they can bite and you don't even know it until you get back home. They never bother me, they love hubby.

Rules on chickens in your yard, that would depend on where you live and the codes for the area.

I think it boils down to what we refer to as gnats. I was raised in southern CA where we did have what everyone called gnats in the spring and summer, the same in the Dallas area and here as well. I have heard them referred to as fruit flies, but I am not sure they are the same, nor am I sure what you are calling gnats and we call gnats are the same, but I can guarantee you, what we have called gnats for over 50 years do not sting or bite. They are simply a nuisance. When we have visited Tunica, MS a couple of times in the summer, there have been very small mosquitos, that are all over the place in the very early morning hours. They resemble a gnat, but are not the same. According to people in Mississippi they are a form of a mosquito.
