Having been a teacher in Wisconsin for over 30 years, it's been interesting following the trials and tribulations of Arkansas schools. My experience has lead me to believe that the TEACHER in the clssroom is the key....not canned programs, rating test scores, trying to have one size fits all. My philosophy has always been, we rather be good than look good.

schools( or states) that downplay the importance of test scores as a means of gauging education are usually the first to put it in headlines when the test scores go up.

I was being totally sarcastic, I think what is being done here is probably a better way to educate our kids. Yes our kids' scores on standardized tests are lower but what would these "better" states be like if they weren't giving the kids the answers?!? It's one of the dirty ill-kept secrets in Maryland, that Montgomery County (who typically places several schools in top spots on standardized test scores) keeps many kids from actually taking the tests. My son's previous school in Carroll County Maryland actually spent a few of weeks going over "study guides."
Don't get me wrong, standardized testing is important. But making it the emphasis of schooling gets us nowhere.
