When you originally scoped the place out....why didn't you just walk right back out the door and continue your apartment search?

We're all adults here. Take responsibility for your choices.
this entered my mind as well. OP certainly saw the property prior to renting and being a clean freak as she mentioned, I would think she would have seen the dirt. Yes, she said the landlord said she could paint, but I would still think the dirt, would have turned her off. I am not a neat freak by any means but would have walked away from a house that dirty.

I wonder why she hasn't come back to tell us if she has taken any of good suggestions that have been posted here?

What City-Data member STARTS a thread with their very first post?
I Did.

I was moving out of state and needed some answers from people who already lived where I was going.

Well, she said, "The landlord is very laid back and allowed us to have our dog, rent is fairly decent, he said we were allowed to paint, etc."

I think when she said rent was fairly decent, she meant dirt-cheap.

Then once she was in, she decided she deserved better. But no matter how much she scrubs it's never gonna look like HGTV.

Thank you for any suggestions.
I once had a very old gas stove that had a pilot for the oven, but not for the cooktop. I had to light the burners with a match every time. The gas man is probably right. If you know what you're doing, you can clean it yourself. It shouldn't cost much to hire someone local to come straighten it out. Call your local appliance dealer if you have one. I enjoy cooking on old stoves better than new ones!
