Fort Smith's problem is it's economy was too heavily based around manufacturing during an era when manufacturing has been in decline throughout the country. I'd say the area is facing many of the same problems the Rust Belt is experiencing.

Culturally I'd definitely say OKC and Fort Smith seem somewhat similar and NWA has more of a Tulsa feel.
