It would be nice if we were more concerned with raising our standards as a society, but obviously we’re stubbornly insistent on doing the opposite.
I agree that some people will do incredibly unwise things (I did a few things that fit that description, and did them sober, so I have no excuse). But I cannot see a valid reason to quit calling them incredibly unwise, nor should the government decide not to work against the problem. I especially don't want the same government that tells me I have to subsidize people's healthcare telling me I have to support those people harming themselves, thus increasing the burden on the healthcare system.

(I do have some Constitutionally based issues on how we go about attacking the drug use problem, but that is only at the federal level, not state or local.)

I find it appalling how many people want to call good evil, and call evil good. I also find it "amusing" how many people posted to this thread supporting us harming ourselves and our loved ones, and some of those people don't even live here.

I almost fell out of bed last night watching television. One of the public service stations had a cheerful commercial advising viewers that marijuana is legal to anyone over the age of 21 and then keep going offering points how to be a responsible user. Good old California.

The fact that so many people still automatically associate marijuana with heroin, cocaine, and meth is a big part of the issue. Do you really think it belongs associated with these much more addictive, dangerous drugs? If so, why?

I think the biggest barrier to cannabis legalization right now is the stigma. People associate it primarily with the counterculture of the 1960s and the moral decline of American society. Stereotypical stoner culture also doesn't do it any favors. I think it's going to take another decade or two before cannabis legalization really goes mainstream outside the bluest of the blue states.

...
Because it is just as addictive and dangerous. Just more subtle. The first thing it does is damage the parts of the brain that allow a user to understand how addictive and dangerous it is, and then slowly destroys their lungs, and the rest of their brain.

It is obvious today that the inability to think rationally is spreading like a virus. Where formerly, upstanding Americans dedicated to truth were looked up to, today when they show up, there are riots and shoutdowns, because people do not want to hear the truth. Eventually, when too few people know the truth about Marijuana and other, derivative, agents, Pot will be legalized, even here. Already there are people on Internet forums spreading the lie that it isn't dangerous.

You cite the beliefs of a single religious organization as being the reason we won't legalize recreational marijuana?

They also opposed medical marijuana, and casinos. Voters approved both.

It is human nature if we like something we want more / stronger of the same.

As a teenager I tried some wine. Rum or vodka was even better.
My first motorcycle was a 125 cc Honda, the last an 1100 cc Kawasaki.
Most gun guys and hunters begin with a 22 LR, then move up in calibers as they get older.
The desire - temptation is enormous and hard to resist.
