Hi. Hubby and are are scouting online coming up with a few possibilities for our retirement. I saw a property in Pettigrew, Madison County that has piqued my interest.
What can you tell me about the area? Is there anything there? How far for medical care? How do the people feel about "outsiders"? I'm from Maryland, hubby originally from Massachusetts. We are conservative and Christians, and we are desperate for a more rural, quiet place to grow some veggies, learn to can, have a couple chickens, be more self-sufficient, and escape the madness of the east coast.

Pettigrew is about as rural as you can get. It's pretty far out, quiet, secluded, etc. All the things you are looking to do is probably what everyone else in the area do as well. However, you'd have to adapt to being much further out from certain things and medical care is one of them. Fayetteville would probably be your nearest larger town/city, Clarksville to your south (still rather small town but has a hospital), Huntsville to your north (small town but has groceries, etc). Probably an hour's drive to each. The highways are rather winding but mostly good condition.

Have to agree with Holly on this one for sure. Huntsville might be a little better match for what you are thinking about. It is small, very rural and only about 1/2 hour drive on decent roads to Bentonville, Fayetteville area. What comes to my mind right away would be Pea Ridge for sure or maybe West Fork. Both are rural, have just what you are thinking you want and are certainly conservative and are close to everything. I have always loved Pea Ridge. Our granddaughter and her husband used to live in West Fork. They have 14 acres and really enjoyed the country living They only moved to the city when they had kids. Mostly because the house was not kid friendly.

Not much there. Post Office, church, small store (if it's still open). Long, long way to medical care. Absolutely beautiful area, though.
