I saw an article from a few years back that a large gator was found dead in Jonesboro, and another person stated gators having been seen in the St. Francois in far southern MO near the AR border after flooding. I didn't think gators would make it up to Jonesboro, bootheel region?

I saw someone else said they claimed gators used to be seen in the Ohio river near Cairo IL, and Paducah area

They stocked alligators in the Holla Bend National Refuge Area and maybe other areas of the state back in the 80's or 90's I think. I'm not sure why because if they were there naturally before, you can be pretty sure our ancestors worked hard to eradicate them. I always thought the winters were too cold for them further north, but I don't know that for sure.

For sure, especially a bit more north is the Boston Mountains, coldest area of AR. No way they'd survive there. They'd freeze to death.

You can be pretty much assured that our ancestors were smarter than the current crop of environmentalist wackos we have today.

Unless they were introduced to deal with some other invasive species, it would be doing everyone a favor if they were, once again, eradicated, in the north half of the state.

The author and I disagree, on at least one point:
Quote:
Unfortunately, not all of the alligators survived the cold snap at the Red Slough Wildlife Management Area, a 5,800-acre (2,300 hectares) refuge in southeastern Oklahoma
I can't see anything unfortunate.

Lol, you betcha.

But I was disappointed that the link to the description of a gator in that area from the mid 1800s didn't work. If anyone finds it please share.

The sightings of gators around Cairo IL on the Ohio, are those true, or someone making that up?

I've heard of a few sightings in Reelfoot lake, dunno if that's true but that would mean they're in the Bootheel too. I've of a few cases of them in the bootheel in the summer on the MS river.
