Hmm..why do people not like NWA? and Fort Smith? Im probably just a naive teenager, but I believe that Fort Smith is a nice quiet little town, with low living expenses as compared to LA, or whatnot. And high population? I think that around 80-90 thousand isn't THAT much? To me it seems almost like a Podunk little town but its a nice peaceful place, if you know where to live in Fort Smith, like Fiana Hills, or anywhere on the Southern side of town. Plus it has a nice history, being a military fort, and being called hell on the border and everything.

I prefer the Northside because it is much more diverse all the Asian and Hispanic markets etc. are on the Northside.

Not the place for me. I think there are a lot of people who would really enjoy living here. It is very slow. It is very blue collar, very conservative, and very religious. I am none of those so not for me. The biggest factor is that Fort Smith is not seeing the same type of growth as other parts of the state have seen. No matter where you live unless you are retired or independently wealthy...you are going to still need a job.

I think FS should find a niche. People don't come here to shop anymore. Maybe they need to open a super mall....something to get people to come here.

Rogers already did that. Pinnacle Hills Promenade blows anything else in the state, even the malls in Little Rock, completely out of the water.

In my opinion Fort Smith should go the Hot Springs route, and try to establish tourism. The US Marshalls Museum will be a start but there are a ton of things that could be done. The town is perfect for it because its so historical.

How about starting with riverboat casinos.

Thumbs down Fort Smith Is The Worst

Fort Smith, AR is not a great place in my opinion. I moved here a few months ago for my work and it is the worst place I have ever been. The town has some cool history which I love but that’s about all. The leadership refuses to move forward into modern times and it is obvious when you drive through downtown and see at least 60% of the town boarded up.
There is a golf club that went under for the same reasons. Fiana Hills country club had to shut down because for years the old folks refused to let newer, younger members join and eventually ran out of money because it was all old money refusing new money. Same situation for the town, old money refusing to keep up with the times. Not in a cute or charming way either. Fort Smith is old, dirty and and boring. There are a few decent places downtown if you can find them between the boarded up buildings.
In my opinion, Fort Smith is the worst place I have ever been.

Until you posted this thread was 10 years old. Have to wonder why you revised it?

Personally speaking, I like to some of these threads updated to reflect whats changed (or has not changed) since the OP started the thread. I was happy to see the new posts because I am still researching states we would like to check out next year.

We've recently added Arkansas to our list....
