I was surprised several years ago in 1993 when our country had the big blizzard. I lived in Ohio at the time getting ready to relocate to Tn. While Ohio had their trucks and salt, and had a lot of it cleared, Tn. was totally unprepared. For the next 10 years that I lived in Tn., every time the snow word was mentioned, people would freak out and run to the grocery store. I thought it was weird at first but as time went on, I learned to stock up some, just in case.

We did the same thing, believe it or not in N VA. I can remember 1 year everyone running to the store when a storm was predicted. I had 1.5 liter of wine in my basket. It took us so long to get to the checkout counter, the guy behind me said we could open the bottle and finish it before we even got to check out. BTW, we did have a bad one that night. We do stock up, just to be safe anymore; yes, with wine as well as other staples.
Merry Christmas to you and hope 2016 will bring you joy. This goes for all of you on this board.

Nita

You have to understand that the south is not prepared for ice and snow. This is why schools cancel and milk and bread go out of stock the moment a winter advisory is announced. If you're coming from up north, you'd know that it takes months to melt, but here it takes a day or two (maybe a week) and then it's gone. While we may laugh and joke about it, you cannot expect everyone to be prepared like those up north are. I've went to school after a foot of snow dropped, so it was weird seeing schools cancel at forecasted "inch or two" of snow. I'm use to it now and see their concern is more towards the ice than the snow.

The south gets ice storms a lot in winter and even to me that makes me a nervous wreck on the road.

Edit- ahh you came from a warm climate "that sees snow once every 10 years".. I'm guessing Florida or Texas. If you're use to warmer climates, you're in for a shock if you think the south doesn't get winter. You'll see why a lot of people do not want to drive during or after a snow storm.
I think you have misread what I wrote because I certainly don't think I won't see winter. I'm completely prepared for conditions such as ice and snow and cold temps. I won't be in for a shock, I expect it.

you might get it before the next week or so. Toward Monday, at least here in NWA we are looking at rain and lows in the 20s. What does that mean? Well it doesn't mean it is time to go and work in your garden.

and that is about what we are going to do. Our local, independent grocery store usually has some kind of super sale the few days after Christmas, so I am waiting for their "facebook" update in a few hours. Then I am heading to restock the fridge. I am putting the turkey bones in the crock pot, making soup and freezing it til Tues night or Wednesday.

I still stand by what I wrote. You might be prepared, but that doesn't mean everyone else is.
