Two Forrest City police officers shot at Walmart this morning, sigh...

The prayers and thoughts of the ASP are with the two Forrest City Police Officers that were injured this morning in a shooting at the Walmart store, located in Forrest City.
The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division has been requested to conduct an investigation of the incident, and will be on the premises throughout the day. Please stay away from the area if at all possible.

while this is a fluid situation at santa anita and yes we are getting horses, jockeys and trainers from all over the nation coming in, there is another reason oaklawn has and is raising purses. the family that owns oaklawn, has a long history in horse racing. so, they are and have been for several years, using the profits from their adjacent casino to raise the purses on the racing side of their business. oaklawn has acquired new land and built several new barns every year for the last few years. the racing and the gaming at oaklawn are a huge industry for the hot springs area. (i walked through the casino this past weekend, just to check it out and it was pretty full in the middle of the day, slots and table games)

Oaklawn has craps and everything - I didn't know that. They didn't have craps in Oklahoma when we lived right across the border in TX and they don't have it up here, either. I don't actually play, but craps is my Dad's game. He's always happy to hear about a new craps table opening up somewhere. I've never actually been inside Oaklawn, but all this talk about it is making me want to check it out.

Thanks for the info. We learn something everyday. When the resort is totally finished we plan on a weekend or maybe week day venture for a few days. Our granddaughter thinks it would be a fun trip for us, especially hubby who is having more mobility issues as the days and weeks go on. She knows Hot Springs pretty well since her inlaws live there and have for probably close to 50 years.. I have been to Oaklawn once and had a good time, but yes, as you mention the casino is a bit small and very crowded.

Craps used to be hubby's favorite game but the stakes have gotten higher and he can't stand for very long periods so now it is strictly the race book for him. We used to go to Vegas or Laughlin NV a few times a year when we lived on the west coast or in NM. He split his gambling time between the Crap table and the sports book.

On casino size, they have a new large addition that should open in the next few days. They opened part of it last week and it was nice. (And the new addition was non smoking!). Also on the mobility part, they have escalators and elevators to the casino floor. Go have some fun!

just to add, the renovations and additions of more casino space and a resort hotel are going to total over $100 million. so, no small project.

Getting closer to my Arkansas move and career in Real Estate. Should be getting the OK from the Little Rock gov't office in the mail any day now. Definitely been a bureaucratic process, especially with living in another state. But I should be able to fly out an take the exam next month. At least I'm still employed in California so I can be a bit patient.

Looking forward to becoming a part of the NWA community & culture while doing my part to enrich and improve the area in any way I can!

Where in NWA are you planning on living? Interesting you are in Real Estate, I was as well when still living in CA years ago. We relocated to NO. VA near DC. I was able to transfer my licence without taking the test. When we moved from VA to TX this was not the case.

Welcome to AR; if you are anything like us you will love it, even with its drawbacks and of course there are some. No place is utopia.

Fayetteville. It probably fits me best. I’m still in the younger side at 31.

I’m switching careers from tech to Real Estate. I want to work people and have more “control”. Looking to rent the first and but in 10ish months.
