My wife and I are considering retiring to Mountian Home AR. and would like to know what the city water quality is like. We were told that there is a lot of limestone in the area , so does that mean that the water is really hard ? We visited the area in the past and think it's wonderful.

Reddoberman- The city water is not hard, but if you don't live in town or somewhere with rural water, a water softener system is a good investment for well-owners in the area. Overall water taste and cleanliness has always been good, but you will notice when the lakes turn in the late fall and spring... The water is still clean and safe, but I think the taste is less than ideal then. Nothing a Pur filter on the faucet can't take care of during those couple weeks though!

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Mountain Home- I don't live there full time anymore, but it's a nice little town in a beautiful area that has a lot going for it compared to most cities that size. (Relatively cheap real estate and taxes don't hurt a bit either!)

thewizard16 --- thanks for the info, glad the water quality is good. We have dealt with hard water (calcium) for a long time now , and are glad for the good news. We live in the southern part of Colorado and hope we will be able to ajust to the humidity in the Mountian Home area. The heat will be no problem as we get into the high 90's here in the summer all the time.

I think you'll be fine! The humidity is only an issue for a couple months each year, and once you hit fall it's all worth it. Arkansas is beautiful in the fall (and spring), but the Ozark National Forest area, Northwest and north central Arkansas, southern Missouri, and up into central Missouri are especially stunning.

I have a well, and although lab tests have shown it to be the purest thing around, it defines "hard water".

Shortly after moving in, I told my plumber that I wanted to change to a tankless water heater. He said, "Not without a water softener", and that it just wouldn't be worth the hassle.

So...the water softener went in, and my Doc said, "Use potassium for softening rather than sodium, which I did, and with the potassium in it, my BP dropped and I was able to reduce those darned BP meds.

In addition, my glass shower doors don't get dirty, the dishwasher does a bang-up job, and clothes stay white and come out nice.

Overall, no down side.
