Also the magnitude is one of three important factors. Others being where it is centred and depth. C-Chruch was centred in the middle of the City. Japan's is 130 kilometres from the coast. Japans is 10 km in depth which is worse than C-Church.
I thought earthquake forces where incremented in some weird fashion .. like a couple thousand more times with each number increased on the scale.

Hope everyone in Japan is okay. I have heard the death toll was already over 19.

Unbelievable.

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake woke me up from a sound sleep and I thought a garbage truck was careening through the yard and I braced myself thinking it might hit the house. It was scary, like staring down a tornado or waiting for lightning to strike you. I still see cracks in the plaster from it.
I'm not sure when this hit their time( night or day) but I'm sure they had warning sirens up although they might not have had much time. It just underscores how you have to be aware of whats going on around you and be prepared to take action to ensure your safety.
As for me, I might re think buying that beach house in Malibu.
