Well, at least North Korea is catching up with the USA in learning how to slant the media to bash countries that are currently in disfavor.

Actually if I'm reading it right in their own index China is happier than they are. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised by that in a way.

If I read it right the Happy Planet Index puts Costa Rica as having the highest life satisfaction.

Life Satisfaction | Global HPI | Explore | Happy Planet Index (http://www.happyplanetindex.org/explore/global/life-sat.html - broken link)

The World Database of Happiness seems to agree placing it on top for general happiness, happy-life-years, and inequality adjusted happiness.

Denmark, Iceland, and Switzerland are all close to Costa Rica.

You kidding? They've had that on lockdown since the late 40's.

I get several chain emails a day from Americans that do nothing but bash everyone in the world who is not a white conservative American, the they are even further from the truth than anything the North Koreans can even dream of. I just got one the other day that said Harry Truman kicked 13 million illegal aliens out of the USA, and so did Herbert Hoover. North Koreans have way too much dignity and self esteem and respect for truth and honesty, to ever circulate chain emails like that. and the North Korean people are too world-wise to ever believe it if they were told such outrageous lies. If they ever do, they will learn from Americans how to do it.

The average American is told more lies every day than the average North Korean, and uncritically believes every one of them, and then forwards them to my inbox.

That's not really representative of the average American, though. I don't get any chain letters. It's sad that there are people out there who think that things like chain letters and anecdotes from pastors are the most reliable form of news in America, but they are a fairly small subsection of society. Do you really think that the average forklift driver, code monkey, store manager, etc. wakes up, checks their inbox, and goes "GOD DAYMN IT, this here thang's a-saying that th-th-the big ol' government fat cats are-uh tryin' to take away mah guuuuuuuuns! Says right here, see... see... they've-a-done made it illegal to own a gun in Kommiefornia!"?

Do you just not interact with anyone but the people who send stuff to your inbox? How do you even know these people I just don't get it.

Just curious, you ever been to North Korea?

I was waiting to see if you'd respond, but you haven't yet. So...

The conspicuous lack of internet and thus email access for 99% of North Korean citizens sure doesn't hurt.

There is no broadband in North Korea, and if you were to get your hands on a traditional 56k modem, there is no ISP for it to connect to without government permission, which you only get if you're a government official who has an excuse to surf the web, and in that case, your ISP actually goes through China. There are 30 North Korean websites, each of which is run by the DPRK, which can be accessed via Kwangmyong, which is North Korea's internet-stand in. Think of a work or school network that only allows interaction between users on that network, and is not connected to the rest of the internet... that's what Kwangmyong is. You can send emails within North Korea, but they are monitored. You can go to the online library, and read articles on how Kim Jong Il regularly hits holes-in-one while golfing and there was a lunar eclipse at the moment of his birth, or how Americans ate little Korean babies and Japan is a puppetmaster, responsible for every ill in the world.

The North Koreans believe a lot of lies, not because they're dumb, but because they have no choice. They're not allowed to read sci-fi, or listen to non-Korean music. They get fed a steady stream of one opinion and viewpoint, and nothing else - no counterpoint. No ability to post their feelings online or publish a 'zine. I'm sure that the average North Korean sees the writing on the wall and knows it's BS, but also knows what will happen when they step out of line.

Sorry you're so bitter about being/living in America. It's your right to be so, but it's a shame that it's the case. The average North Korean was born into a grandiose lie that involves the elevation of Kim Il Sung as god, Kim Jong Il as Jesus, and America as satan (which you may agree with). They have absolutely no right but to believe those lies.

At least we don't have speakers installed in our homes in which propoganda is piped in, or run the risk of being imprisoned for being a dissident for not wearing our American flag and face-of-president pins.

The thing that I always wonder, when people talk about North Korea and Cuba as being workers' paradises... how come people are willing to risk their lives on a raft in the gulf or running a militarized border to get out if things are so wonderful? I actually identify as a social democrat, which means I'm a "socialist" according to the chain-email Americans you loathe, but to turn the DPRK into a land of virtue and harmony is just plain incorrect.

I hope you're being ironic and/or kidding.

Whatever, comrade.

Have you ever read the posts in the Politics and Other Controversies forums? Would you say that having sufficient understanding of North Korea and its history and economy and social institutions WOULD be representative of the average American, who think that Iranians are Arabs and that Chavez is a dictator who siezed power by brutal force.

No, I've never been to North Korea, but I've read enough about it from enough sources to know that there is more to North Korea than what the average American has been told by giggling Fox and Friends hosts. While the "average American" has not read anything in the past year except People Magazine in the doctor's waiting room.

Infrequently.

You should consider it, Koryo Tours does trips in the DPRK for about $2500. It's subject to current political conditions, of course... so if they recently kidnapped a Korean-American or we threatened to stop sending them rice for shelling our allies, you may not get your money back. But hey, nothing risked, nothing gained.
