For me it was closer to one of the better known Thai beers Singha. It was good after spending a hot day on a rickety raft on the Mekong river. Not as good as the beers I had when I lived in australia. Definitely not good compared for a Belgian beer. But for my limited time in Laos it was pretty good.
Its being 5 years since ive being to Laos and cant remember much about the beer, I can remember it being nice, but did not really stand out.
We can get beer lao in Australia, i buy it occasionally, weather its the actual lao stuff or not im not sure. Once again nothing particularly brilliant about it, its good howver. I still prefer my tassie beers.
San Miguel in the Philippines...I could find the stuff for 11 pesos in convenience stores. That is something like 25 cents in American prices, or 4 San Miguels for a $1
I buy Beerlao sometimes in Paris, but it's just to remember my trips to Vientiane and Luang Prabang. There is nothing special about the taste as far as I am concerned.
Sometimes in hot countries, just a very cold beer tastes great. I know its that way for me with Philippines San Miguel. But if I drink a San Miguel anywhere else, it doesn't taste so thirst-quenching anymore.
most of the ppl who praise it the way you're talking about only do it cuz everyone else in their clique does. seriously, just read all the descriptions of ppl drinking beerlao. they always describe drinking it during sunset on the mekong. over and over and over again. sooooooo lame. its like one of the must do things in se asia for hipster backpackers: drink beerlao on the mekong and then talk about how cewl it is and how cewl they are cuz they did something so cewl in a far away cewl land that only hipsters (sshhhh) know about
Agree with all of the above assessments. SE Asian beers pale in comparison to good beer and derive their cachet from context. Even Tiger beer is not that great, I finally decided. It gives me a headache and leaves a corn taste in the mouth. Heineken is so much better, and available for just a little more.
But, Tiger beer, Beer Lao, and Kingfisher have cool labels, eh? Makes for nice, show-off, T-shirts.
