How is the city of Johor Babru, Malaysia?

Previously, it was just an outback of Singapore, with nothing special to it. But, with Malaysia seemingly awash in more money these days, it seems that all of Malaysia is getting better and better all the time.

Is Johor Babru a liveable place? While probably nowhere near as good as Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, does it still offer enough to be an easily placed #3 in the region behind the other two?

Or would people say that other cities like Penang or elsewhere in Malaysia would still offer more than Johor Babru?

Johor Bharu or 'JB' isn't anything special among Malaysian cities. For me, I'd put George Town in Penang as number 1 and Melaka as number 2 but I'm biased because I live historical architecture. After that would probably be Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu and then maybe JB. Some Singaporeans go there for cheap shopping and whatnot on the weekends.

I did quite like Penang, Malaca, and KL. I also found Ipoh to be very underrated. No one really goes there, but that city seems very liveable to me. Lots of beautiful scenery around there as well.

I've yet to actually experience or see Johor Bharu. I think when a person gets that close to Singapore, it's just to much of a magnet not to go to.

Kota Kinabalu is another I'd like to check out. I never heard of it until Air Asia and other budget airlines starting going there frequently. It seems to be becoming a bigger and more important small city all the time.

Actually I forgot Kuching, which I would put at number three. A very attractive city, with friendly people, ethnic diversity, great food, so close to nature...yes Ipoh is a bit underrated, it has a lot of the old classic shophouses you see in Penang. Kuantan on the east coast should also be mentioned for Malay architecture. I generally prefer Malaysia for a holiday than Thailand. Aside from shopping JB doesn't really offer anything too unique but its an interesting day trip and the food is good.

Johor Baru is nowhere near the top in Malaysian cities. Ipoh, Taiping, Kota Kinabalu, Kucing, and Kuantan are all decent places that rival the popular places (George Town, Malacca, and Kuala Lumpur). Johor Baru has one of the highest crime rates of anywhere in the country.
