Yeah I'm not sure how it is, they also mentioned local conflict, nothing to do with terrorists targeting Westerners, in much of Indonesia like Sulawesi or Irian Jaya.

yes... most conflicts are either secessionist movements or religious conflicts. i find most of these have died away (or at least not as rampant as before) in recent years.
having visited north sulawesi, i have the intention to visit south sulawesi too (the bugis homeland and the toraja highlands), but not before i make it to sumatra, flores, lombok, and the moluccas.

Maybe this will help promote Indonesia as a tourist destination. Although eco-tourism can have it's drawbacks , I think the benefits will be greater, and the alternative is worse. Much of Kalimantan has been ravaged by logging. Sabah and Sarawak have been quite successful with eco-tourism, although logging in Malaysia still continues. Ecological and cultural tourism will help raise more awareness, build up the economy and preserve the environment/cultures, maybe allowing many minority ethnic groups live a more traditional lifestyle into the future.
Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java - known for the ever-active Mt. Bromo (the most famous and the most easily accessible) and Mt. Semeru, the highest volcano in Java

Well, if you're speaking about Mega Manila - Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces - then you've got a point. Talk to my friends (also locals) and there are plenty of things they'd LOVE TO change about the place.
What is the cuisine in Indonesia like? And what about the nightlife?
