Of this list, I have visited Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Qingdao. I liked Qingdao as a nice resort town and Shanghai as place where things happen and as a foreigner one doesn't feel so much as an outsider.
Excluding Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, I've been to 10 cities in China. But I will just include other cities I haven't been to, as I will not include some of those cities I've already visited as "favorites":
If I had to live there everyday, it would be Taipei. Actually Tainan is nice, and I'll take a villa in Taidong. For overall quality of life, it isn't even close: Taiwan going away. BUT, if the Mainland could clean up its act with pollution, hands down I would choose Chengdu. Chongqing as well, except in summer.
Isolated? You have Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul within a hour flight.
