The Japanese diplomat, Chiune Sugihara, was sacked from his position by the Japanese government for his humanitarian act for the Jews in WWII. In the 90s after strong lobbying by the Jewish people , Japan belatedly bestowed some official recognition on Sugihara.
There's a good film on that, called Sugihara. I used to play it for my university students when I taught in Japan. It was a great way to get my students to connect in some way with what was happening in far away Europe and Nazi Germany history.
In general, most Asian students are understandably apathetic to European events, just as much as European students are apathetic to major historical events in Asia.
Jewish community... I wonder where are the descendants of these Jews now ? Still in the Philippines ? Or Israel ?
I think some still stay in the Philippines and others moved in Israel. I know other Jewish descendants moved in Samar and glad to know that in time of need Israel is there to help our country during Haiyan (Yolanda) typhoon.
