haha, is Manila 24-hour nightlife like NYC? On weekdays? Awesome...I'll keep that in mind.
A lot of people hate Manila because it's crowded, dirty, and smokey and the traffic but if you like cities and you like nightlife then Manila definitely has a lot of it in spades so you'll enjoy.
Re poster who said an hour to\from the airport from malate. Maybe I'm lucky but it's actually never taken me that long to get to the airport. I am in the Phils now and just left Manila a couple days ago it took about 20-25 minutes from\to the airport and Malate.
Thanks everyone! Turns out I won't have time to hit Manila this time around. I'm sure I'll be back within the next couple years though so I'll get there eventually.
My itinerary is Hong Kong-Macau-Zhongshan-Penang-Singapore-Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur-Taipei
I have lots of friends and family in every one of those cities, but I welcome general advice from this forum!
Well Manila and the rest of the provincial area was hit by strong typhoon lately. 3 days in a row with continuous rain, so right now it's not the right time to visit but I'm sure within few weeks you may visit there specially this coming holiday season. So you'll experience the different Christmas holidays in the Philippines.
Wow, I've been reading all the old threads I started in the Asia forum. So, turns out one year later (September 2014) I finally made it to Manila. Had a great time but honestly did not see too much in a quick 3-day trip. We visited some friends who were sorta high society and they basically took us to all their favorite malls, fancy restaurants, bars, spas and to chill out at a resort. The closest we came to seeing some nitty gritty Manila was dinner at one seafood market and a segway tour. I have no illusions that I saw much of the "real" Manila.
Haven't had a chance to get back but hopefully soon!

Well, Metro Manila has many different faces, so they're all real IMO. That's what I like about it. Different areas can feel completely different from each other. If you want to be very technical, only Manila city is the real Manila. But most people consider all of Metro Manila as Manila because Manila city is a tiny area.

Manila is either scarred or tattooed by America depending on the interpretation.
