No, those shows do not influence the world greatly, such activities are not popular outside of China.

But then, I don't need to rely on a TV show to pick up women here, so...
I bet you can't speak Chinese. Otherwise it is impossible not to have heard of that show.
Nope, not yet I start lessons next week, after everyone's back from the holiday.
I'm taking Mandarin lessons, but about half of my coworkers speak Cantonese and are trying to convince me to learn that instead.
In the end, though, I didn't watch TV in the states and probably won't watch it much here either, so even if I heard of it in passing, I don't think I'd know much about the show itself.

That is a "show", so it does not mirror real life.
However it is true that many Chinese women will not date you if you don't want to get married.
