The PRC isn't the China. It doesn't control all of China, nor is it the only state bearing the name "China". It shouldn't be given the sole right to claim 4000+ years of arguably the greatest civilisation in human history.

Well, it's not like the Taiwan was a huge part of that 4000+ year history, it's no more Old World China then America is Old World Europe, Chinese people only started to settle there at the behest of the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century.

I don't see how the two situations are even remotely comparable, I'm sorry. Why should 60 years of exile cost you your nationality?

They're separate nations. Taiwan was only briefly part of the Qing dynasty anyway - in fact I'm rather surprised that the Chinese did not colonise it earlier. Anyway, Taiwan is a separate country in all respects but name, and most Taiwanese consider themselves Taiwanese first. In fact most don't even consider themselves Chinese. I think they should become independent, it's not like the ROC is ever going to reclaim China.

Maybe when Americans and Australians move back. A lot of Taiwanese have been there for up to 500 years. Most of the Hoklo, the early settlers, have some aboriginal blood, which is more than you can say for Americans. One could say the Philippines belongs to the negritos if you go back far enough.

Just go back to Europe, which is smaller than China (excluding Russia).

Most Taiwanese are descendants of those who went there in Qing Dynasty, when the USA did not even exist .

Most Taiwanese people are Chinese by ethnicity but Taiwanese by their nationality/citizenship.

Taiwan is home to them. Why don't you Austronesians go back to Taiwan too then and leave the Philippines?

People in mainland China often identify with their home province as well. Considering Taiwan is so well known, it wouldn't surprise me if your friend would do so himself. I don't know your friend, but just because someone identifies with Taiwan doesn't necessarily mean that he doesn't consider himself Chinese.
