Much of the 'Kurdish' homeland is in fact Assyrian territory. Kurds are the newcomers. Their homeland is probably somewhere in Northern Iran. In a way, they stole Assyrian homeland + annexed some territory north of it (Turkish Kurdistan). Kurds have some ethnic tensions with Assyrians (indigenous people of the area).
On the other hand, much of Kurdistan is prosperous and virtually free of terrorism and the like.
Overall, I'm not really sure if Kurdistan will ever gain independence.
