More than 500 illegal outdoor barbecues, which Chinese state media say cause "serious air pollution", have been destroyed in Beijing as part of an emergency program to alleviate the city's often hazardous pollution.

I read an article in The Economist recently on the air pollution in China where they estimate, due to the air pollution, this will shave off the life expectancy of many Chinese by 5 and a half years!
Lung cancer rates, even for those that don't smoke, keep rising and rising! COPD medication must be in great demand over there!

They seriously need to do something about it now. Not that the whole world doesn't (just cos we can't see it don't mean it ain't there and in the atmosphere), but from a public health standpoint it's especially urgent in China. Spending time in big Chinese cities can be a horrible experience because of it and it's certainly not helping their image.
Really, those determined to be responsible for cutting corners and flouting safety regulations that led to this unimaginable disaster should be lined up and shot posthaste....
I think China made the strategic mistaking of encouraging private car ownership to spur the economy. Now everyone is hooked on the car culture and consider taking the subway, which is everywhere, a poor man's choice, just like in the US.
Except China has too many people to afford the car culture.
