One of America's great authors, Mark Twain, said "Travel is fatal to prejudice."

I think your family should travel more. Good on you for keeping an open mind, and don't let anyone, not even your family, come between you and love. Your family will eventually forgive you, and if not, you will become family to another set of people until your original family will feel sorrow and beg forgiveness.

Do understand their perspective and do understand their lack of exposure to other cultures. Pity them, and ask them 1000 times for an open mind. After that, let nature run its course.

Good luck with love and travel and all that. The fact of the matter is that most Chinese I know are very open minded, and even the less educated ones are quite polite and friendly (for instance, most have no problem with gay marriages, except that they find having "no kids" to be quite a sad fate until they learn about the laws allowing for gays to adopt). It takes quite a lot for them to hold onto and remember a deep grudges....20 million dead isn't a small number.

I think your family will ultimately see your new girlfriend or future wife as a real person, and separate from the historical Japan that they hate. It'll be fine once your Japanese lady friend becomes a real person instead of a theoretical one in their mind, especially if she is a nice person. Chinese people are generally kindhearted like others. I was just giving you the historical context so that you understand why they still harbor such strong feelings toward Japan.

Movies and tv drama on the war against Japan are broadcasted in China on different tv channels, in the morning, afternoon, evening and mid-night. There is no opinion in China to discourage the production and broadcast of them. Incidents in history, Pesonal experience of the war-time Chinese people, Japanese as bad guys hostile to the Chinese in the movies and tv drama are the elements for the dislike of Japanese.

Although the people of HK, Macau and Taiwan do not dislike the Japanese as much as the Mainlanders, they do regard the Japanese as wrong in World War 2 and Japan claiming Diaoyu Islands as Japan's territory.

Diaoyu islands? WHere are those?

Oh I see you refer to the Senkakus. Sorry but this same tired argument is over nothing. They belong to Japan and have since the later 1800s. Japanese people at one point set up a small community there to harvest birds and their feathers. Even China sent a letter to Japan, thanking them for rescuing some stranded Chinese sailors from "The Senkaku islands, territory of the Empire of Japan."

If the Chinese government at the time and all international governments till now recognized the Senkaku's as Japanese, why the change suddenly? They're obviously Japanese and the majority of independent scholars agree. It's only China's hoopla and attempts at distracting from internal issues and of course greed ... the oil deposits in the area are very great find.

Sorry, eskercurve, you are wrong about the Diao yus...They belong to China.

Since you are going there, here's a nice rebuttal to your claim for those who are interested in the actual sovereignty of the Diao Yu Islands...Read the English part from someone who actually did some research on the topic.

There are also many Japanese historians who actually agree with the Chinese argument.

when you invade a country by force, brutally murdered millions and raped tens of thousands, yet more than half a century later still deny the war crime and even glorify the criminals, how do you expect the victim country to forgive, not to say like you?

If Germany still deny the crime it committed during WWII, how do you think Europe will see it?

Germany is a country worth respecting. Japan on the other hand, is not.
