This article is interesting as it talks about the Chinese Government ensuring freedom of speech via the internet for its citizens. But on the other hand, it censors the internet and blocks accessing to various foreign social media and news websites. What are your Chinese internet experiences?

Spent the whole August in China and having limited access to foreign websites really lowered my experience in this nice country. I really do hope the gov. would stop this blocking, everybody would benefit from internet freedom.

Years ago (2004), working at a US based company's office in Beijing, I had unrestricted access to any website (no, I did not check to see if porn was accessible). I was surprised and asked the administrator, who told me that they had some type of a direct circuit that fed off of the internet at the US HQ office, which enabled the Beijing office to bypass the "great firewall" of China.

Can't you just use some sort of proxy or vpn in China then? Or will they find out and get you?

I'm in China and yeah, nearly every foreigner and many younger, more net-savvy/curious Chinese folks use VPN's or proxies. The government will do a "crackdown" every now and then, by which I mean they block proxy sites and whatnot - literally the day after I bought my proxy, I could no longer access their company page without a proxy... no one I know has been spoken to by the government for their misdeeds or anything like that. Again, it's quite prevalent, and as long as you aren't trying to forment discord or posting up photos of sensitive material, it's not worth it to them to come after people.

Without a VPN, you can't access most major overseas social media, sites like blogger, youtube, dailymotion, or adult sites, etc. You do have access to Gmail and Google Drive; before I came here, I'd heard that you weren't able to access these. You also can't access US google; it routes to google.com.hk. I have been able to access Wikipedia without a proxy, but haven't tried to look at any "sensitive" topics like the Senkaku/Dokdo dispute, Tibetan freedom movement, etc.

Same as what everyone else says. I can't view facebook, youtube, etc. when on Mainland China.

Way too restricted.

For the record, when you are here in HK/Macau, you can access everything.

Hong Kong has special status and one can access everything (also from my experience there). For Westerners traveling to China, I believe you need to set up your VPN before entering China for it to work properly.

Well I got mine working from within China, but again, like the day after I got it, I could only access their homepage from the proxy (I was able to access it via regular Chinese internet access prior to that). You can get one from within the country, but it's definitely tougher.
