There are many Brasilians in the Philippines and I heard them once in an interview said that Filipino and Portuguese personalities are a bit similar ( except being more liberal ) which is one of the reasons why it is quite easy to get adjusted in the Philippines, not to mention both countries being tropical.

I guess it's because Americans took over and introduced Basketball. If they didn't take over, Football for sure would have been more popular in the Philippines. Former Barcelona player Paulino Alcantara was a Filipino- Spanish who played football in the Philippines, Catalonia and Spain. He was the first Filipino and Asian player to play in a European team.
