Self Flagellation is not practised in Portugal or Spain.
I am certain this practice was introduced by Mexico.

Yes, It is same practice in Mexico. In Philippines we called it 'Penitensya' and in Mexico, Penitentes which has the same roots of Penitensya.

Filipinos are nationalist even before early American occupation, Those Filipino Catholics are happy being Catholics that's why it was hard for Americans to remove that to Filipinos. Other Filipinos during those time they promoted more our nationalism through music, dance and continue the catholic practices. But because American hold the education system from early occupation until 20's to 30's they make the Spanish Occupation who introduced Catholicism in the mind of Filipinos as antagonist and always remind that Filipinos resisted Catholicism & that it was force religion but 81% more or less are still catholics, So it created some Filipinos to hate Catholicism and they bash it due to the introduction of Catholics even up to now you can still read haters, Anyone may choose to convert to other religion, we have freedom to choose. So others created their independent church like Iglesia ni Kristo founder who used to be a Catholic.

But I can also say that today lots of Filipinos are lack of nationalism. Is it because of too much freedom of democracy. Lots do not abide rules, there are only few politicians who is not corrupt. Don't know what happened to our Philippine politics.

It seems like Indonesia the idea of the nation of the Philippines was recent and largely a colonial creation.

What would you attribute to growth to more evangelical, especially Pentacostal Christianity too? It seems something that is happening through Latin America and Africa too.
