Hi..

Curious where are you from ?

Singapore is a fully developed country, with high overall level of wealth and income, high level of education of its citizens and high standard of medical care. Singapore belongs to the very high category in HDI.

Singapore is widely regarded as an important global city, the hub of almost everything in the SEA region. Manila is generally not regarded as an important city in the region. Philippines is widely not regarded as a powerful country in the region, it is not a regional power and not a world power.

The only country that may have a future as a major SEA power is Indonesia, not Philippines. Frankly speaking, no SEA country will have great future as a major Asian power. The major Asian powers will likely still be China, India, Japan and Republic of Korea.

The Philippines is full of crimes. Singapore is a more stable country.

And there has always been many many people leaving the Philippines, earn their income in another country because the income overseas are often much higher.
I think the fact that the Philippines is largely English-speaking will make it more important in the world than a country where most people don't speak English. English is the global language. People from all over Asia come to the Philippines to learn English. I think when the ASEAN integration happens in 2015, more people from other Southeast Asian countries will study and work in the Philippines because English is supposed to be the official language of the ASEAN. That gives the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia an advantage.

The Philippines has relatively little crime for a third world country. Yes, when you compare it to Singapore, it looks very dangerous, but it has about the same crime rate as Thailand and Indonesia. These countries are about as dangerous as the US, and nowhere near as dangerous as most of Latin America.

After Indonesia Thailand is no 2, then Malaysia, then Philippines and Vietnam, although I suspect Vietnam's China-style boom might see it overtake both the Philippines and Malaysia in overall GDP.
I don't see how the Philippines is getting left-behind. It's doing better than ever. Indonesia has a slightly higher GDP per capita (PPP) but it has a lower HDI than the Philippines. So I'd say they're about the same when it comes to development. I see the Philippines improving more and more in the future, especially with the passage of the RH Law, which will provide free birth control for all. Population growth has been one of the main things that's holding the country back (the other is corruption, and maybe climate change).

The Philippines is a country of over 100 million people, its economy is booming, there is lots of new infrastructure projects going on and the quality of life is getting better every year.

The brain drain that used to happen in the Philippines, where skilled people left the country, is slowing now.

Educated and skilled Filipinos are choosing to stay in the Philippines now, and it is having a great effect as new successfull businesses are being created.

A country of over 100 million, with a booming economy, new infrastructure and development and where the people speak English.......Of course it was guaranteed to become a great Asian country, its mathematically and politically impossible for it not too.

The progression and upwards development of south east asian countries was laid down over two decades ago and was inevitable.
The bigger ones are obviously dominating and will dominate more in the future.

The direction the Philippines is going in is clear for anyone to see.
The gap between the Philippines and Singapore is reducing every year.

It is inevitable that the Philippines is developing into a significant and successfull country, and they still have assured great growth potential which will continue for at least a few more decades.

The philipines is allready a more important and significant country than Singapore and has a much greater future and potential.
In a decade or two it will match singapores level of development aswel.

When that happens the difference between the two countries will be vast. One a rich small island and the other a big, rich and powerfull country.

About the maids:
In London the Filipinos I've seen are mostly skilled immigrants doing professionsl jobs like doctors, web designers etc, I've never seen any Filipino maids or servants. We don't like things like that in Britain, its almost like slavery

Hmmm, economically speaking not being an English speaking country, or having most people speak English, doesn't seem to be a handicap. China, Japan, Germany.etc are just three obvious examples. Obviously most of the world doesn't speak English still. Even culturally, while Anglosphere nations punch above their weight, in Asia Korea and Japan will remain the dominant cultural forces I think. I think Filipino media and culture just isn't as interesting as the stuff that South Korea and Japan produces. Certainly, in terms of business, education, research.etc Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines, the only English speaking (to a significant degree) nations (only the first two are significantly NATIVELY English speaking though, in that a lot of people use English as their primary tongue) in Asia. Malaysia will continue to be a more attractive option for expats because it's safer, better quality of life, more developed.etc but hopefully the Philippines can change.

Well that's good to hear. Both of course are overall pretty poor. Still, the Philippines has a long way to go. Like India, talking about economic progress is all good and well, but being an English-speaking professional working in some nice modern office in Manila, living in a nice house in a gated community is certainly NOT how the average person lives.

I don't think he was suggesting Singapore is not...although if LHL allows more foreigners in, we might hear less and less English. It's better that Singapore becomes more and more English. Among native Singaporean children more are speaking English. It's those from the PRC which seem to be keeping Mandarin numbers up. Since Mandarin was never your mother tongue maybe you should try speaking English more, even if it's a European language. Mandarin was also imposed on you by LKY in his speak Mandarin campaign.
