Aside from the civil disturbance that occurred under his watch, his track record as Gujarat Chief Minister has been immaculate. Gujarat has been steaming ahead under his leadership, averaging 10-11% growth for the past decade. Under his watch, Gujarat became a model for sound and efficient governance in India.

Also, Modi represents something, the self made man. Indian national politics has been mostly dominated by one family since independence, and here comes a guy from what the Indian gov't defines as a "backward class" who started out in life as a tea vendor and has an iron will for bringing change to an ineffective political/bureaucratic system.

Most Indians rightfully have the impression that nothing happens in India because of endless/corrupt bureaucracy. It'll be interesting to see what Modi can do on the national level.
Very educational, thank you. And yes it does seem corruption is the main problem on all levels for India.

The BJP led Lok Sabha will be able to relatively easily deliver reform on the national scale in areas such as loosening FDI regulations, political reform(anti-corruption measures), creating a simpler and more transparent federal tax system, and to a certain extent labor laws.

The hard part will be getting the process for infrastructure projects stream-lined as state governments relatively have a lot of power in India and most infrastructure projects are stalled/killed at the state level. On the campaign trail, Modi has proposed creating federal/state partnerships to stream-line infrastructure projects which, if implemented correctly, could create a huge incentive for states to work with the federal gov't to rapidly develop and implement infrastructure projects.

Education reform is also going to be a fairly tough hurdle to clear. India's education system is going to have to move away from rote learning and focus more on critical thinking if it's going to develop a robust knowledge economy. This is especially important as automation and micro-manufacturing(3-D printing) could very well make labor intensive manufacturing(which Modi seems to have a keen eye on developing) obsolete in ~20 years.

A pretty damning article on Mr. Modi from ten years ago, with a prediction on his future prospects as prime minister (and its consequences) at the end:

I wouldn't pay too much mind to such articles. Those same South Asian scholars that wrote the piece, are Congress supportes and have no issue with the massive corruption that political party has engaged in since Independence. Even today, after Modi has own the elections.. a British politican stated the world is going to watch how he treats all minorities. The funny thing is his type never say squat about the atrocities being commited against minorities in Bangladesh and Pakistan. This politican also conveniently overlooks the fact that many Muslims voted for Modi in this election. Nobody is buying the riot BS anymore. Would anyone blame the governor if riots took place in NYC? NO.

The Indian Liberal Elite(in India and abroad) have actually done a great job of painting a villainous portrait of Modi. He's the only individual to ever be denied a visa to the US on the grounds of "restricting religious freedom", which is somewhat humorous since he's never promoted/attempted to institute policy that discourages freedom of religion and there's a plethora of other countries/leaders that actually restrict religious freedom.

I remember reading an article where a Gujarati described his people by saying, "Some men fight with swords. We fight with our minds." Awesome quote and awesome businessmen it sounds like.

My main doubts were hearing this Modi guy was a socialist, but hopefully he is business minded.

Exactly. The liberal elite are theones use divide and conquer tactics. They bring up caste, religion, and use scare tactics to get voters. If anyone paid attention to these elections in India, Modi's campaign never brough up such issues to use in its campaign. It was actually pretty clean from what I can gather. However, the Congress party kept on yanking on such terms to gather votes. Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

In this day and age, especially in a growing economy....the world let alone the Indian ppl won;t stand around to allow anyone to persecute innocent ppl regardless of their religion.
