You see what happened in 2019.
Still waiving the flag of the UK about a week ago, rioters are now physically against a large British bank in HK with many people from all walks of life including pro democracy camp HK people also its long time customers.
If it is SG vs HK, SG wins. Mainly due to being more peaceful.
Japan is a law or rule abiding country with more than one city and one billion people, insular and strange society with low birth and immigration so no comparison with HK. The US is famous for violence, so no comparison with East And Southeast Asia.
HK lost to SG in 2019 because some but not all HK young people destroys HK. The local shoppers and tourists away are afraid.
HK doesn't progress significantly, it did progress significantly like Singapore in the last decades of the last century. what we see this century is an increase in income or wealth of HK Chinese and foreign companies and residents, with the rich and smart people very satisfied with the increase and this is related to the rise of the economy of China, such as more and more Chinese stocks traded in HK and the increasing investment from Mainland China. Macau progress significantly after the Portuguese rule ended but now have trouble maintaining the growth due to decreasing tourists and amout of money gambled.
The profits of some industries will be maintained or grow, the damage to British and Chinese bank branches in HK is useless as depositors, money lenders and financial traders don't have to arrive at branches while some industries such as restaurants, tourism and non online retail suffer because no people seen means no profit.
