Anyone who's lived in India knows what difference the monsoons make. I remember it as a time when things cooled down and we had torrents of rain. I was really glad for the cooling down part--wow, does it get hot before the rains.

The start of the monsoon season is a huge change. When I lived in the foothils of the Himalayas in India, I loved the misty days the most. Everything sounded different, felt different, smelled different. The monsoons also meant so much difference to the farmers who depended on them, and wanted them soon enough, but without too much flooding.

What are your experiences? Have you lived in south or southeast Asia, and felt the huge change with the coming of the monsoon season? How did it affect you?

The monsoon is a blessing and curse. The rains bring life giving water, but too much or too little rain will ruin a harvest. The monsoon has been weak this year, and the government had to release a quarter of the state's food-stock to prevent a shortage/inflation. The unreliability of the monsoon coupled with the British policy of collecting property taxes rather than the traditional Indian policy of collecting revenue taxes is one of the causes of chronic mass poverty seen in North-Central India.

While visiting India as a child during the summer, I remember someone from the neighborhood having to quickly go out and lift a manhole cover to prevent the neighborhood from flooding when it rained.
