JB has a much higher crime rate than Singapore especially pick pocketing targeted at people who come over the causeway to shop. There’s a significant ex pat population in Malaysia especially around Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia has an ex pat retirement visa for foreigners who meet certain financial conditions.

There’s been a lot of high rise condo construction in JB a lot of it financed by the Chinese. And Malaysia as a whole is much cheaper than Singapore. Have also noted an ex pat population in Penang with quite a few Brits many of whom were military types stationed in the area years ago.

Possibly the wealthiest city in Malaysia just because of the direct immediate close connections. Right?
Or is Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown Penang, Ipoh, Malecca above Johor Bahru in average salaries? The top
5 in Malaysia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._by_population
Tons of vast unknown full label alien names for some quite massive towns.

Is Singapore affecting the economic wealth for the native citizens? Or is there exploitation in the labor market?

The Luxury Hotels are exceptionally affordable in relation to the costs of Singapore.

Huh? Alien names for massive towns?

Not sure what you mean here, but I will give it a go.

Cities and towns in Malaysia usually have Malay names. Some of the older ones that were named by the British retain their British names (e.g., Georgetown).

I learned Malay so the names are not alien to me.

Baru = new
So Johor Baru is New Johor. Johor is also the name of the southernmost state in Peninsular Malaysia.

Kuala = estuary, either where a river enters the ocean, or where two rivers of similar size meet, also called a confluence.
Lumpur = muddy
So, Kuala Lumpur is at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers. BTW, it is pronounced Kua-la, and not Ku-al-a.

Malacca was named after a tree specie under which a Malay hero took shelter (pokok melaka).

Some Malay towns carry Chinese names, such as Taiping.
