Guys, I'm not really here to go into another mindless 50-cent style, West vs. China discussion. Been there done that. If you want to defend how Communist Party is so awesome or how western liberalism is a pile of trash you can do that among yourselves. Cheers.

Yep, labeling others as 50 cents is such an mature and effective way of argument. Nobody said ccp is awesome and west is trash, rather you are unhappy because not every agrees that ccp is trash and the west is awesome.

This is the Asia forum, not the US forum...and I see such topics as off-topic and belonging to the P&C forum. But what's the difference here? In the US and the rest of the west privacy and intrusion can be discussed and debated freely, people complain, it becomes a social issue, a political issue, laws can (and are) passed to restrict it.
In China - discussion of this nature do not happen, issues do not happen, debate does not happen, it's the governments way or prison.
Now lets get back to discussing ASIA.

If you read Chinese, you will know such discussions are everywhere on Chinese websites.
The problem is, most westerners know nothing about Chinese internet community due to the language barrier. Do you know what "check water meter" means as a Chinese internet slang, for example?

It's not just a question of language barrier. I read Chinese fine, but I often do not understand (or have to do additional research) things like this exactly because of the Chinese censors. You cannot always speak plainly on the Chinese internet or you risk having your post deleted (or worse), so people use a lot of puns, euphemisms, etc. to evade the censors. Many of these are not familiar to me (although I find them very creative and funny :-) Somebody even published a book called Grass Mud Horse listing many of the most common and creative phrases.

Huh? So not knowing the language somehow discredits all foreigners from criticizing the Communist Party? Plenty of Chinese people have very little English or Japanese language ability, but that has never prevented the frequent attacks on Japan and American politics as displayed by online comments, the barrage of TV shows proudly demonstrating how to slice a Japanese invader in half, and the anti-Japanese/anti-America editorials on Huanqiu **** Times and People's Daily. Nuff said.

Very few Chinese really care about Japanese or US politics. But if you want to criticize something, you got to know the reality first. No?

Internet censorship in China is more complex then that. The government simply wants what they think is the best of both worlds - capitalistic money making machines while at the same time paranoid control of it's citizens.
In other words, they don't want full globalization, which is what the poster you responded to was saying.
