Today, the South Asian country of Nepal made news headlines in some of the media in the US. Nepal is a Himalayan nation, formally a kingdom, between India and China that is mostly Hindu with a significant minority of Buddhists. The Buddha was born in Nepal.
According to The Huffington Post and other American news institutions an important government panel in the capital of Kathmandu has recommended the Nepalese government legalize same sex marriage. The issue of marriage equality has been discussed for years in that country since the revolution that overthrew the monarchy.
If same sex marriage is legalized there, this will be the first time it is recognized in South Asia. Last year Thailand legalized same sex civil unions that cover most of the benefits of marriage but not all. Same sex marriages are legally recognized in Israel, so long as the actual marriage was first formalized in a place where it is legal ... such as many countries in Europe, Canada, the US, Argentina, South Africa, etc. The King of Cambodia has come out in favor of legal same sex marriage. I understand some judges in a few Japanese administrative districts have started giving out marriage licenses to same sex couples.
