I visited kathmandy 15 years ago and was in awe with the beauty of the place, so natural. Even the people exhibited so much simplicity, it was very refreshing. It extremely disheartening to hear what has happened there.
My parents stay in Delhi on a 10th floor apt , and were thousands of kilometers away from the epicenter and they told me the building swayed like it was a freaking swing.

The death toll from Saturday’s earthquake has risen to more than 3,800 as fears grow for the fate of people living in remote villages. One aid worker told the Guardian that he feared that as many as 15,000 have been killed. Survivors desperate for shelter have turned to camping out in sewage pipes as thousands of people prepare to spend a third night sleeping rough.
It figures the only people I know of who had ever gone to Nepal in my life were in or around KTM when this happened. Actually, I think one of them just left a day or two before, but still. They are okay.
I guess tourism in Nepal is dead for the time being. I mean, it doesn't help that the window for trekking is just about to end because of the incoming pre-monsoon heat and then the actual monsoon, but that will especially hurt this year. I was already planning on going this fall to do the Mardi Himal trek, and possibly get as close as possible to Kanchenjunga around the border crossing in West Bengal, India. My timing is good for the economic disaster this surely will continue to cause.
I'm surprised in a way that such a large number of buildings seem to have remained intact in this video filmed by a drone in the capital Kathmandu. I would have expected a lot more to have collapsed.
