Since I've been in SK, there have been two BIG legal changes: 1. Adultery is no longer illegal 2. Bankruptcy law changes These are ground breaking to me. And I'm wondering how much the US had to do with influencing these changes. It seems that more debts are being discharged under bankruptcy as time goes on, and it is becoming more socially acceptable. The government also enacted laws to help low income debtors. One thing that is still different from the US is that heirs inherit parental debt by default. Dead scarlet letter | The Economist

In China debts are not inherited by law. However, when people pay their diseased parents' debt, it is praised and encouraged. And some people actually do it.
Adultery has always been legal in China, but committing adultery with a military serviceman's spouse is subject to punishment.

Adultery was illegal in the Republic of China on mainland china and Chinese dynasties. Adultery is still illegal in Taiwan and the Phillippines.

Taiwan changed its laws in 2010, making prostitution illegal for both customers and workers except in specified areas. Prostitution is currently illegal in Korea as well.

Adultery? I always had the impression that adultery was quite common already in Korea. Particularly among men. Prostitution is quite commonplace throughout Korea, and for many years, it was completely socially unacceptable for a woman to ever divorce a man; so therefore men just did whatever they wanted sexually with whoever.

Weird law in the Philippines technically it is only adultery if a married women has sex with someone other than the legal husband, but then with no divorce the legally separated are rarely if ever prosecuted. Married men getting something on the outside of the legal marriage could be charged with concubinage which is basically getting caught by the wife and causing a scandal to her name. In theory if he is discreet he commits no crime.

Thought Taiwan is very pro-Japan and policies is similar to Japan.

Japan is a very open minded asian country. Adultery, prostitutes and pornography are all legal. South Korea seems to be the opposite of Japan, maybe strongly anti-japanese.
