Japan right now is undergoing a massive demographic crisis and Western economists/leaders are urging them to open up their country to immigration. Since it is much easier to assimilate people of similar racial backgrounds, should Japan consider opening up its immigration to China and Korea? I can't imagine Japan agreeing to immigrants of a different racial/cultural background since that would fundamentally alter its culture so China and Korea seem to be its only option. It may be necessary to stem off the demographic decline but it may also lead to political changes that would be unfavorable to the US such as a more pro-Chinese government in Japan. Nevertheless, do you think that is worth it?

Japan needs nationalism and Shinto fertility festivals. It doesn't necessarily need replacement level fertility rates, just enough to prevent a social and economic death spiral due. Something in the range of 1.8-2.0 will suffice.

Japan suffers the same problem as Europe does with immigration, as in the immigrants and their descendants will never truly be accepted as Japanese. Immigration only works in places that have been populated by "newcomers". They'd have to bring in too many immigrants to combat current demographic trends anyway.

I think it is too late for Japan. Even sky high immigration rates wouldn't save it. Similar to Germany. Despite millions of immigrants over the decades Germany hasn't had natural population growth for almost half a century.

Supposedly Japan needs 200K immigrants a year and a total fertility rate of 2.1 to maintain a population of 100 million. So they probably will need to double that if they want to grow beyond its current population of 127 million. If Japan were to let in that many Chinese immigrants the culture would definitely change and the country will probably become more pro-Chinese and would defuse tensions with China if those immigrants naturalize and start voting.

Japanese are way too xenophobic to let anyone besides Japanese in. Bad blood between them all with what Japan did in the world wars and all, not to mention the tension current day.

Sure, you'll get some Chinese and Koreans willing to move, not so much Koreans these days.

Assimilation, there seems subtle and larger differences between the 3, despite a lot of common overlaps. Chinese and Koreans tend to be a little more loud, uncouth and generally outspoken, starkly different from the Chinese. Koreans could easily manage the Japanese language (very common) but for Chinese, they'd probably have some degree of difficulty.

Koreans and Chinese are the two largest minorities in Japan today anyway.

Can't see it happening, years ago they lured many South American Japanese back, still faced massive discrimination and all.

The father of my acquaintance, who is a Chinese living in Japan without a green card, got a cancer in China. She and her family members didn't trust Chinese medicine and helped him to get a travel visa to Japan. As soon as her father got to Japan, she managed to get him a medical treatment visa and national insurance from our government. All he had to pay was 30% of the total, just like all freelancers in Japan. Who will pay the rest?

Will your country offer this kind of treatment to foreigners who had never paid a dime to your country?

In the US, he could just refuse to pay the bill and leave.
He doesn't need a good credit score anyway.

Crazy idea.

Talking about being friendly to other Asians, Japan should rank behind Taiwan, South Korea, HK, Singapore, the Phillippines, Malaysia, Thailand and etc. They like westerners much more than other Asian foreigners.

My relatives are a Taiwanese couple who are settled in Japan after graduating from Japanese universities.

Most Japanese do not like the Koreans and Chinese. They will not tell you about this. Taiwanese, they like a little bit more, only slightly more. This may be due to that most Taiwanese in Japan can speak fluent Japanese and Taiwanese being much less anti-Japan. But they still think Japan is better Taiwan. They still have the old colonial mentality, think they are much better than other Asian countries. But my relatives do not think Japan is really that great.

Some Japanese men and women may make friends with other Asian girls and women. But Most Japanese women are not interested in other Asian men. May be shy or afraid of other Asians.

It is pretty sure many Indonesians, Filpinos and Vietnamese want to move to Japan, these 2 countries are much less anti-Japanese and have many people who want to move for much more amount of money. Many of them are already working in other richer countries for economic reasons. Unlike the Gulf states, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. Japan's policies do not welcome Asian foreigners to work there. And very few Japanese marry people of other Asian countries. There are many South Korean and Taiwanese men marrying Vietnamese women for examples.
