The US media isn't really interested in the South China Sea since it doesn't really drive the ratings. Foreign policy geeks are an incredibly tiny niche and few Filipino Americans or Chinese Americans are interested in what is going on there. Most people aka the mainstream audience also don't really have a good understanding of the issue in the South China Sea and it isn't as interesting as other foreign policy issues like ISIS or North Korea. From the perspectives of the news media, you get a lot of gruesome beheadings from ISIS but you don't really get anything interesting from the South China Sea unless you think Chinese/Filipino/American leaders condemning one another is interesting.
That's why those who think the US would risk a full fledge war with China over any of those islands or such in the SCS is just stupid. Even the Filipinos are realizing this.

... and anyone who thinks that China would risk a full-out-war is stupid all the same. Just a bunch of saber rattling. It's kind of entertaining to watch tbh.

But.....China is gaining on the ground, or sand....one island at a time. This is exactly the right strategy.
Major Chinese state paper calls for a military strike on any Australian ships which might undertake "freedom-of-navigation" activities in the region
Around the announcement of the arbitration tribunal over the South China Sea, Australia was one of the most delirious countries. Canberra immediately supported the arbitration result and claimed China "must" abide by it, and also signed a joint declaration with the US and Japan. Australia has inked a free trade agreement with China, its biggest trading partner, which makes its move of disturbing the South China Sea waters surprising to many.
Australia calls itself a principled country, while its utilitarianism has been sizzling. It lauds Sino-Australian relations when China's economic support is needed, but when it needs to please Washington, it demonstrates willingness of doing anything in a show of allegiance.
Analysts say that besides trying to please the US, it also intends to suppress China so as to gain a bargaining chip for economic interests. China must take revenge and let it know it's wrong. Australia's power means nothing compared to the security of China. If Australia steps into the South China Sea waters, it will be an ideal target for China to warn and strike.

The global times is worthless... A state owned tabloid, really. Its supposed to be the CCP's mouthpiece to the world, but they seem to forget that the rest of the world is not China.

Seriously I don't understand why the Aussies want to get into this mess. Is it because it thinks it's a white country and so it has to get in on the action too? It's the neighborhood white trash and so it needs to keep its mouth shut and move along. Just be a nice tourist destination, take care of the barrier reef and leave the geopolitical stuff to the adults please. A paper cat lol😀
China's Supreme Court said on Tuesday people caught illegally fishing in Chinese waters could be jailed for up to a year, issuing a judicial interpretation defining those waters as including China's exclusive economic zones.
I am noting again that the title of this thread is false. The U N did not rule anything. The arbitration court has NOTHING to do with the UN. In fact, the UN specifically made this clear and distant itself from the decision when it first came out.
These kind of sloppy misinformation is what the western media use to muddy the situation and smear China.

The biggest smear on China is actually the actions of its own citizens and commercial enterprises. The wholesale environmental destruction that has been wrought by Chinese fishing fleets in the area is pretty distressing. I'm not sure I care who stewards the land, but it's a shame to have such an amazingly terrible steward.

Australia has always be extremely active in participating in global affairs, to the extent one wonder whether it is due to some inferiority complex because it is so isolated and nobody in the world gives a damn about it. It engaged in almost every single war since its inception no matter how far the wars are, always desperate trying to prove its relevance.
Without the demand from China, Australia would probably be more like Italy or Spain. I fail to see why it has to choose side on this matter.
As to a country of principle, did Australia "urge" the United States to abide by UN decision related to its aggression in Nicaragua? Principle my sweet a$$.
