I am in Thailand now.
A lot of the people are terrible. In the airport, after a guy was sleeping on the bench he got up and stuffed my passport and phone in his briefcase. It looked like it was probably an accident, but sure was stupid!

And on the streets, people bother the hell outta you every 3 minutes! Impoverished motorcycle-riding people always bother you to get on. They yell taxi. I don't care to get on those things so they can get lost!

They probably can see you're a newbie, once you get more experience in the country people will bother you less as they can see you won't fall for their scams.

How did he get your passport and phone? Did you set them down?

Me too. I always keep my wallet secured with a wide rubber band around it and carry it in my front pants pocket. My passport is a little large to easily fit in a pocket (although I suppose I could manage) so I stow it in a zipped up leather fanny pack that I wear in front and under a loose shirt. The fanny pack has multiple zippers and a very secure clasp. The only time my passport comes out is when I'm actually required to show it. I don't have a mobile phone, but it wouldn't be that hard to slip it into a shirt pocket or pants pocket. If the phone is a bit too large, stick it in the fanny pack. There are too many risks for theft or loss in crowded places, especially like an airport the size of Camp Swampy.

If you are an American you can enter Thailand without a visa but can stay up to 30 days only. You have to make sure also that you passport is valid for at least 6 months and should have a round trip air ticket. Aside from that you must have at least 10,000 Baht to secure you have enough money for your stay there. As far as I know you can only extend your stay there up to 7 days only. You can call the embassy to be sure.

you can now get an extra 30 days on your visa exempt 30 days on arrival. 1900 thb at the local immigration office. You can always be asked for an onward flight. If you need a 60 day TV; most go to Vientiane or Penang....others are a hassle.

Get over to the Nana Hotel where there are many newbies and oldies. Or the Landmark Hotel down the street.
