I don't think I've met anyone who's been there. I'd go if I got a free ticket, but it's not even on my radar. It was on the news here about 13 years ago when we helped them gain independence, but now you never hear about it.

No. I looked into it, but didn't seem worth it.

If I remember right, visas were expensive, and it didn't look worth the price and time of getting there, connected with what little there was to do there.

Probably the only reason I would visit it (along with Brunei) is my long-standing quest to visit all 11 nations in Southeast Asia.

East Timor is still undeveloped regarding tourism. I met a guy from East Timor and he looked as if was from Papua New Guinea

In Australia I had a neighbor from Timor. IMO He looked more Indonesian which would make sense. He definitely did not look liek he was from PNG (see link below)
East Timor Travel Information and Travel Guide - Lonely Planet

The info on lonelyplanet makes me want to visit, though its pretty expensive to get there, it would seem. Only by air. No boat services.

An interesting fact, East Timor is the most Christian nation in Asia, more than the Phils. It's 98% Catholic.
