I was just curious, it is one of the most successful Democracies in the planet. I'm not at all impressed if there was such a policy. But I wonder, if part of the reason why they are so successful is that it seems they ban immigration by race, especially if you're not White (even you are White, it seems, based on what I can see in the population), that immigration isn't going to open you with open arms, but at least they seemingly will not say "Hell no." as quickly.
This isn't meant to be an anti diversity post at all, but frankly, when everyone is the same race, the chances of social ills is less, since you don't have as much of a chance to divide people and cause conflict.

Sure, they don't have to worry about race baiting politicians.

Japan is imploding due to a declining and aging population. Their economy hasn't grown in 25 years and their debt to GDP ratio is totally out of control. They do allow foreigners to work there under certain circumstances, but they never really get accepted as one of them.

Otherwise, they have a fascinating culture.

I don't know for sure, but I've heard that yes, Japan has VERY restrictive immigration policies. It would make sense because they are a very crowded country already. And they are also very competitive. Why would they take in millions more people? And the people you do allow in would of course be very desirable people. Statistically speaking that would move highly educated Americans and Europeans with business connections to the top of the list. You're not going to allow in waves of blue-collar people.

A SMALL PART of the problem here in the US is that division of distrust among immigrant groups. Even among different types of white people. I imagine that homogeneous countries have a deeper sense of "brotherhood."

But MORE IMPORTANTLY for "success", I would credit Japan's famous work-ethic, social cohesiveness, and low crime. It's in their culture, just like the Germans and the Scandinavians. It's politically incorrect these days to say such a thing, but culture DOES matter. (I wouldn't call that racist because good culture can come from any race.) The Mediterranean countries in E.U. are generally worse off than the northern countries. Apparently, the colder weather tends to create cultures that MUST work hard to survive.

I'm currently reading an economics book, "Scandinavian Unexceptionalism", which basically proves that Scandinavian work ethic and culture is responsible for success, not socialist policies like liberals try to argue for.

They don't. The nature of the job market just bars pretty much everyone without top-notch education and Japanese skills from entering it. That makes immigration for the majority of people impossible.

Japan is way ahead of the rest of the world with robotics, they started sooner, and if they can get robots to tend to their elderly and work the agricultural fields, and run their hotels (google all-robot hotel in Tokyo) why the need for immigrants?

South Korea isn't much different. The President of South Korea stated in 2006, that he hopes to have a robot in every household in South Korea by the year 2020!

Robots don't pay taxes.

A study by the UN Population Division released in 2000 found that Japan would need to raise its retirement age to 77 (or allow net immigration of 17 million by 2050) to maintain its worker-to-retiree ratio.

As Japan is incredibly xenophobic and racist, I think there won't be an influx of Gaijins.

And it's not that the Japanese are breeding either in the future: http://www.businessinsider.com/half-...r=US&IR=T&IR=T

Sick society heading to a national collapse.

That is very creepy. I have a love/hate thing for Japanese culture. There are certain things I admire and many things that are very off about that society too.

You're not kidding. I used to travel to Tokyo a good bit. Some aspects of the culture are fascinating and their sense of history is to be commended. They have some wonderful museums if you enjoy more than oil paintings and sculpture. Their work ethic is second to none. BUT, with just peeling the skin back on the onion you start to see how odd it is. The whole honor thing on the surface appears to be quite impressive, but they engage in some really questionable practices and whitewash everything after the fact if at all possible.

Spending time with my clients, it felt like everything was choreographed. Each person had a role to fill and that's all they did. Even after work, we'd go out, the boss would get drunk and tell stupid jokes while the staff would emit obviously fake laughs. It was all very predictable. I won't get further into the social weirdness because honestly I was not there enough even to begin to understand it.

Japan does have an underclass, as I learned from reading a book on Japan, but I can't recall the name of these underdogs, that are treated worse than dogs over there, vastly discriminated against, and they even attend separate schools, and no intermarriage with the rest of the Japanese.

It's ironic that the Japanese enjoy eating beef, albeit Buddhism is against the killing of animals, so they need these underdogs to kill the cattle, make it edible, make leather products, but, in the process, they become untouchables.

I wish I could recall name they give to these underdogs, but it fails me!
