I've never been to Bali and I haven't heard of Denpasar. When I think of Bali I think of beaches, nature, and those little houses built on stilts over the water. I don't think of cities. I had no idea there was a large city on Bali. To show my ignorance on all things Bali, I actually thought it was its own independent country until just recently. But, when I think of other beach destination areas like almost anywhere in the Caribbean, Fiji, etc etc, I don't typically think of cities at all. Nobody goes to the Bahamas for Nassau or Freeport. I understand there is a population difference, but the point stands, nobody (tourists) goes to those places for the cities or urban environments.
I am pretty sure Tiger has been to Bali multiple times, more than I have. He does post frequently on it. I think you missed the intent of the post. Why most people don't talk about visiting Denpasar vs other areas of Bali.

Really? THAT'S the question? Gee, I dunno, maybe because Bali has some of the best beaches and outdoor areas in Asia but Denpasar isn't even in the top 100 cities? If you want an urban experience in SE Asia you go to Singapore or Bangkok or Saigon or (fill in the blank), not some little hamlet of 800,000 that has sprung up around an airport and near (but not on) nice beaches. If you're going to Bali, you go to the beaches, not the nearby small city.
Sorry, I thought that was so obvious that I never even considered it to be the actual question. I thought he was actually saying people haven't heard of it, based on his "seldom talked about" line in the subject.

There isn't. There's a small city with an airport you fly into to get to the beaches and nature.

I think that is like asking 'Why do most people talk about visiting Singapore instead of visiting Johor Bahru?' Because why would you visit J.B. (Unless you are Singaporean of course)? To see Legoland?

Denpasar is the provincial capital of Bali not very attractive compared to Kuta,Seminyak, Legian etc. This is due to the large number of foreign tourists in this place compared to Denpasar. I yesterday celebrated the closing of the year in Bali, this was really crazy, too free with nightlife especially tons of bule/white (aussie, american, british, russian, german etc.)
one of the places that I go yesterday initially only wanted to take pictures in the legian monument but along the way in the cafe / bar full of white there were those who drink, dance, kissing between them. Lol
Usually, when I hear people talk about Bali, I hear KUTA or SEMINYAK. But almost always KUTA KUTA KUTA.
Now one of the places in Bali that is more hits is Omnia Uluwatu, which is perfect for foreign tourists or white who like to party or enjoy the high seas
Landed in Denpasar a couple hours ago, I'll let you know what I think
