Okay, quick preface. I went there years ago....2001, I believe. It was dirty, dusty, very underdeveloped, very poor, and, in my mind, lacking things to do....(except for the most obvious of reasons....i.e. shooting a cow with an oozie, or whatever craziness that would be illegal elsewhere).

Fast-forward, I went back. It's changed a lot. More development, more things going on...and the one thing people always love about Cambodia, was the people! Back when I was indifferent and read about expats who loved Cambodia, it was always because of the Khmer people themselves that they liked so much.

That connected for me this last time. Just everyone I met was so humble, nice, willing-to-help, and all the rest. There is more development in places now, as well. Still nowhere near the level of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. But, it's not like almost nothing like before. Many new changes. Phnom Pehn felt like a different city altogether than the one I visited in 2001. Still lacking a lot, but the positives certainly outweighed the negatives I perceived previously.

As another aside, the visa laws are quite good for foreigners to stay and own businesses and such. It's back on my radar again as a possibility for long-term living. Still prefer the more developed countries nearby, but Cambodia isn't removed from the list by any means.

the ease of visa almost negates the difficulty in medical and dental. Good travel insurance would evacuate you to Bangkok. It is a top destination for visa runners from Thailand, including some very dodgy characters. I like the beer scene (better than Thai).....things are just more brazen. Girls approaching you, with their boyfriends ten feet away...a British friend told me if you see a Khmer doing anything except shuffling his feet; he has likely just stolen something. And apparently, there is a huge fencing operation on tv remotes and they can get a quick two USD for a stolen one. Passports 60 bucks...and I have never seen more people who had recently had one stolen, than there. It would be automatic jail for a Thai to get caught with a stolen passport.

I started with coke, bread, and pomelo..then progressed into soup and squid, but I bought a sausage and it was about the worst ever...They will refill water bottles and sell them, sell dead lighters, dead batteries, and anything else for an easy buck.

One of my bigger complaints was terrible laundry service, and it is not great here, but there were zero coin washers to do my own. I also didn't like the Russian mercenary types, and there was some arse with his Rottweiler off leash at the riverside.

If I was too young for visa here, I might consider Mexico before Cambo.....but many stay for decades..and love it...same Pattaya. The Rule of Law is seriously lacking though.

Fried squid..1,50..beer .50 cents...was great

I wonder how much this is going to change...

When I first moved to South Korea in 1996, it was an incredibly safe place where nothing would be taken. The equivalent to Japan, basically. But long-timers told me of another Korea a decade or two previously, where many things would 'walk off' with the locals.

you could probably add smart phones to the list, too.
