As far as the Tomcats go, the USN decommissioned theirs around ten or so years ago. While its a good airplane it's really no match, especially the model Iran has, for later 4th generation fighters (which the Tomcat actually is not) or the currently being deployed 5th generation aircraft.

my point is, its only recently that the US was allied with these countries.
it was during the Carter Admin that the mullahs kicked out the Sha, wasnt it?

then they sold arms to Saddam to defeat the Mullahs
to fund the Contras, the Reagan err North secretly sold arms to the mullahs
