The current lineup has Japan holding the #2 spot after China. Japan has had a total of 96 confirmed cases. Singapore comes in at the #3 spot with a total of 43 confirmed cases, about half of what Japan has. These are current figures (at the moment) and are subject to change.
Japan has 20x the population of Singapore and a majority of the cases are on the boat. Singapore and Hong Kong have a much higher density of cases.
Also, we should not forget that some countries like Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand are probably undercounting the number of cases and can be higher risk than the countries who have more cases.

#2 is Diamond Princess. Japan is way down the list.

I haven't heard of anyone referring to the Diamond Princess separately from Japan, although it's true the passengers and crew have been confined offshore to the ship by Yokohama, Japan. I think what's being overlooked is that the Diamond Princess has been docked in Japanese waters. My understanding is that it had originally docked at Yokohama, and it was determined that a number of passengers were infected. Some had already departed from the ship. Some of the passengers who were sick had earlier been taken to hospitals in Japan. The rest have been quarantined on the ship. Yesterday, the Diamond Princess arrived in dock at Yokohama and met by a number of ambulances and fire trucks to take others who had become severely ill to hospitals. That the ship is at Japan, is why it is being included with Japan, not separated. The only difference is that the ship has been kept away from the land itself, but not out in the high seas. It isn't clear to me just how far from shore the ship has been docked for quarantine. That they have been taking sick passengers to hospitals, raises a degree of concern for the people of Japan. And since some passengers and crew have previously been taken to hospitals, brings the virus to land. What is clear is that food, supplies and medical investigators have been taken to the ship from the start. That some people had disembarked from the ship when it originally arrived, and at least one person who was infected, the opportunity to spread the illness has been present.
To be fair, not all passengers on the Diamond Princess are infected. All are being inspected. As for people elsewhere in Japan, there have been several cases. Some of these inland cases appear to have been from people who flew into Japan from China (Wuhan). Regardless, the ship is at Japan. People have been taken off the ship, but put into quarantine for 14 days to determine if they have the virus or not.
I've been trying to keep up on the situation, not so much about Japan, but primarily from concern to Thailand, as there are family and friends who are worried there. So far, the numbers in Thailand are fairly low (32 total), 10 have recovered, 1 in severe condition, and no deaths.
If you have any references that distinctly separate the Diamond Princess cruise ship from Japan itself, please provide a link so I can be better informed. From what I can see, the ship is being lumped in with Japan because the ship is in Japan. As for separating the two, while I can understand the point, the only thing I've seen has been from posts on this thread with no links supporting it. Keep in mind that the infection has been carried by some people on international air flights. That's a concern because the infection can be passed to people they've come into close contact with. It's not just coming from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.
The company, Princess Cruise Lines, is offering to give a total refund to the Diamond Princess passengers, and to pay for all additional costs and expenses, such as medical care and treatment, lodging, transportation, food, etc.

I agree with that. That's especially true for China as well. In all those countries, it's not so easy to get an accurate nose count in rural areas where people don't always rush off to the hospital or doctor for treatment. It isn't really known exactly how many people have been infected. All that's known are the ones that have been reported. Over the years, I've known people in rural Thailand who avoided medical exams and treatment for other kinds of diseases and conditions, which cost them their lives. They either thought it wasn't serious or they had amulets or magical tattoos to protect and restore their health. It didn't save them.
Also, it's not arriving in SE Asia just by air travel. For travel between Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand, there are plenty of buses, trucks, motorcycles and cars on the road every day traveling between those countries, with ample opportunity to spread the virus. So far it hasn't been too bad in those countries. Thailand has had more confirmed cases than the other two though, probably mostly by international flights.

Japan does not include them in their tally, nor does WHO (a laughably useless organisation, btw).
So what are the numbers telling us so far? The number of newly infected seems to have either plateaued or maybe starting to come down. But that's with the equivalent of the population of Canada on lockdown. Eventually people will need to go to work to make money and leave the house. When will we really know things are 'under control'? Will 5 days of decreasing numbers of new cases be conclusive enough?
One thing to note. If this pathogen is anything like the traditional Flu and similar viruses then once the weather begins to warm into spring numbers will dramatically slow down and drop. Apparently heat and humidity are unfriendly to the flu as every year its a big deal in winter and then boom it disappears largely until the next winter. The cases in Australia should be monitored closely as it's summer there.
It’s certainly got people frightened especially in Asia. A friend in the Philippines says there’s a black market of street vendors selling grossly over priced face masks all over the islands.

Well they should be wearing them as I'm pretty confident that countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia are grossly under-reporting their cases since they don't even bother or don't have the capacity to examine and quarantine properly.
